Katherine Davis has been teaching for fifteen years in physical therapy clinics, private studios, community centers, and colleges. She has worked with a broad range of individuals, from children to senior citizens--some badly injured, others Olympics-bound. Katherine moved to the Bay Area in 1996, after receiving her BA in Dance from Scripps College, and her Pilates certification from Performing Arts Physical Therapy/The Pilates Studio in Los Angeles. For eight years, she performed with various Bay Area dance companies, choreographed her own work, taught modern dance technique to children and adults, and ultimately founded and produced the East Bay Dance Festival in 2002 and 2003. In 2004, she took a step back from the dance world, delving more deeply into the study of Yoga. She completed Piedmont Yoga Studio's Advanced Studies Program in 2005; and Spirit Rock Meditation Center's Mindfulness Yoga and Meditation Training Program in 2009. Currently, Katherine teaches at Piedmont Yoga Studio, as well as her private studio in Oakland. She continues to practice the yogic discipline of svadhyaya (self-study/self-investigation), under the tutelage of Georg Feuerstein, one of the world's leading authorities on Yoga.

I'm pleased to announce that I will be offering a new class at Piedmont Yoga Studio. Starting on May 6th, I will be teaching a Hatha level 1-3 class on Thursday evenings from 5:30-7:00 pm. I hope to see you there. (4/10)

As many of you know, I spent much of my autumn at week-long retreats. It was so important to me that I continue to be there for my students, so I would duck out of class and drive straight to Spirit Rock on Sunday afternoons, then sneak out of retreat a few hours early in order to get back to Oakland in time to teach the following week's class. Now, the time has come for me to sustain my practice for a longer period of time. To this end, I will spend the month of March on retreat. I deeply regret that this will take me away from my students for four consecutive weeks--but equally, I wholeheartedly believe that my deepening practice makes me a better teacher and person. Class will continue: I have lined up very capable substitute teachers, all of whom did their training at PYS, just like me. So PLEASE don't let my absence break your momentum. Practice faithfully, just as you know I will be doing at Spirit Rock. I will be teaching through February 28th, gone all of March, and back on April 4th, refreshed and full of inspiration. (2/10)

As of July 1, I am longer teaching the Wednesday morning class at Piedmont Yoga. I'm very sad to give up this class, but I have an opportunity this fall and winter to attend a number of intensive meditation retreats in quick succession. Time is such a precious commodity, and realistically, I cannot imagine when I will have an opportunity like this again, so I plan to make the most of it. I know that deepening my meditation practice in this way will feed my teaching on a profound level, and I look forward to sharing the fruits of this with my students. I continue to teach Yoga for Core Strength on Sundays from 11:30-1:00, and I plan to expand my weekly class offerings in late 2010 or early 2011. (7/09)

I recently completed the Mindfulness Yoga and Meditation Training Program at Spirit Rock Meditation Center. I hope to be offering some combined yoga & meditation classes in Oakland within the next year or two. (7/09)

Micio Mambo, my local, cruelty-free shoe shop, has closed--another victim of the economic crisis. They are still operating as an online store, however, so bookmark this page! (2/09)

I am still plowing my way through Georg Feuerstein's Traditional Yoga Studies distance learning course. This four-year tutorial covers the entire history of yoga (yogic philosophy), in all its forms. In addition to the scholarly content of this course, there is a strong 'practice' element, accessed through guided reflections and practical exercises. I have found the course to be extremely transformative so far, and I'm just a little more than halfway through! I highly recommend it to people who are focused and self-motivated--in other words, people who work well on their own (it's a long, lonely journey, but well worth it). I hope to finish by November, 2010. (11/06, updated 7/09)
